A Brief History of Printemps Haussmann

The Printemps Haussmann was first opened in 1865 by the entrepreneur Jules Jaluzot and his wife Augustine as they sought to create the first establishment where the fashionable women of Paris could do all their household shopping under one roof. They named it Printemps (meaning ‘Spring’ in French) to reflect the store’s emphasis on fresh, youthful and elegant apparel.

It swiftly became a smash hit, as customers were wowed by the building’s grand design and canny marketing trips such as selling off old stock for cheap in seasonal ‘sales’ — a brand-new innovation for the 1860s! Over the decades, the building has been under constant renovation, always keeping one step ahead of the curve.

It was one of the first buildings in all of Paris to use electric lighting and today is a treasure trove of Belle Époque, Art Deco and mid-century design features. Since its innovative beginnings, Printemps has remained dedicated to selling the finest goods in the most glamorous setting imaginable!
