Story: The Tower of Monsieur Eiffel (La tour de 300 mètres)

Paris 1884 : the government has just announced that the next World's Fair will take place in Paris in 5 years' time. In just 5 years, a slew of familiar characters will work hard to construct what has become the world's most famous iron tower. The Tower of Monsieur Eiffel will immerse you in the heart of the Belle Epoque period to tell the incredible story.

 

Well-known characters far and wide will cross paths during this incredible architectural feat, as the clock races to finish construction before the start of the World's Fair. Au XIIIe siècle, la rue des Mathurins était située juste en dehors de la ville de Paris ; c’était ici que les moines mathurins entretenaient une grande ferme, donnant plus tard son nom à la rue et au théâtre. Après leur exécution, au XVIIIe siècle, Louis XVI et Marie Antoinette furent enterrés dans le cimetière voisin. En paiement de l’utilisation des terres pour installer la sépulture du couple royal déchu, Louis XVIII accorda au propriétaire de la ferme et à son fils l’autorisation de faire du théâtre dans ce lieu modeste à la sortie des portes de la ville.

 

Avec le développement de la ville et son extension, de nombreux petits hôtels chics sortirent de terre aux alentours de la rue des Mathurins, attirant avec eux une clientèle privilégiée, telle que la danseuse Julie Carreau, le Marquis de Beauharnais, George Sand et Maurice Dupin entre autres, qui fréquentaient les petites salles de concert de la rue. Dans les années 1890, la salle qu’est aujourd’hui le Théâtre des Mathurins tenait bien plus de la modeste scène musicale, sans scène et avec peu de sièges. Toutefois, au tournant du siècle, une nouvelle direction décida de transformer le bâtiment en un théâtre intimiste, baptisé officiellement du nom de Théâtre des Mathurins en 1912. Dans les années 1920, le jeune architecte Charles Siclis se vit confier la direction de la réhabilitation de la façade en un extérieur où contrastent modernité et tradition. Une approche architecturale unique dans cette période d’entre-deux-guerres. Siclis concevra ensuite le Théâtre George Sand à Paris ainsi que le Théâtre Pigalle dans le même style.

 

C’est au Théâtre des Mathurins que Sacha Guitry débuta sa carrière, avec sa comédie Nono en 1905, alors qu’il n’avait que 20 ans. Passé entre de nombreuses mains au cours du XXe siècle, maintes personnalités du théâtre français ont franchi ses portes, avec une riche programmation, d’Oscar Wilde, de Jean-Paul Sartre, de Marguerite Dumas et de Sacha Guitry ou encore de Jean-Pierre Bacri et Florian Zeller. Le Théâtre des Mathurins accueillit les grandes figures théâtrales françaises du XXe siècle et poursuit sa vocation de découverte des nouveaux talents du théâtre.
