English speakers based in Paris gather for Paris Expat Theatre Night, to enjoy drinks, meet fellow expats, and see a show at one of the city's many playhouses. Since the success of our very first Expat Theatre Night in the beginning of 2018, we’ve decided to make it a monthly event!

Story: Expat Theatre Night: Hello my name is (Le Prénom)

In September for la rentrée, we're bringing our Expat theatrebuff friends to see Hello my name is, playing at the legendary Théâtre Edouard VII. Before the show, we will gather just around the corner at the charming Taverne d'Olympia to share a drink and snacks (included with the ticket!) and catch up on all things Paris.

 

About the show: They say you should never reveal a baby's name before it's born, and boy should Vincent have followed this advice! When innocently asked if he chosen a name for his unborn son at a family dinner party, his response sends the group plunging into chaos! Hilarity ensues as old grudgeries are once again unearthed, a can't miss comedy with a star-studded cast! The French art of clever arguments sheds light on different perspectives and taboos that a simple name can hold, a comedy sure to leave audiences both chickling and thinking...

 

Since first appearing on the stage of the Théâtre Edouard VII in 2010, this celebrated play was adapted to the big screen in a 2012 hit film. In 2018, the award-winning play finally returns to its original stage, the home of Parisian comedy. A homecoming you can't miss, prepare for this star-studded cast to leave you laughing in your seats!

Le Théâtre Edouard VII est un de ces monuments qui célèbrent la coopération entre les cultures française et anglaise. Fasciné par Paris et tout ce que la ville avait à offrir, le roi anglais Edouard VII décida de contribuer à la vie parisienne en ouvrant une salle de spectacle au début du XXe siècle pour mettre en avant des créations françaises et anglaises. À la différence de la plupart des théâtres, la salle était à son ouverture un cinéma avant d’être rapidement convertie en théâtre. Un de ses atouts est son emplacement idéal, à quelques pas de l’Opéra Garnier, dissimulé au regard de tous dans une petite rue piétonne. Vous trouverez même une statue d’Edouard VII lui-même devant la terrasse du restaurant du théâtre.

 

Tout au long du XXe siècle, de nombreux grands noms du monde théâtral français ont dirigé le théâtre et plusieurs pièces célèbres y ont fait leur première. Au cœur de Paris, quelques comédiens français célèbres ont même joué sur cette scène et ont participé aux créations du Théâtre Edouard VII, parmi lesquels un certain Gérard Depardieu ! Aujourd’hui, sous la direction de Pascal Legros, le théâtre offre une programmation très ouverte, qui s’équilibre parfaitement entre pièces classiques et nouvelles créations.

 

Anecdote

Écrivain, comédien et metteur en scène, Sacha Guitry est la véritable figure emblématique de ce théâtre. Les murs de l’entrée et du restaurant sont couverts d’images des grands qui ont fait l’histoire de ce lieu. On dit que leurs fantômes hantent les couloirs du théâtre, dont celui d’Orson Welles !

On Thursday September 27, 2018, join us starting at 6:45pm for a drink and snacks (included!) before the show, some exciting prize giveaways as well! Expat Night guests will gather at a cosy local spot, the Taverne d'Olympia, to share a drink with fellow Paris-based internationals before the show. From there, we will all head to the Théâtre Edouard VII and get our seats together, Hello my name is begins promtly at 9pm.

What's included with my ticket?

Theatre in Paris Expat Night tickets include the subtitled show of the evening, an exclusive English programme, and a preshow drink and snacks.

Where will I be seated and will I see the subtitles properly?

The theatre is an English style auditorium, and Expat Night guests will benefit from central balcony seating, guaranteeing a comfortable view of both the stage and the subtitles.

How do I get to the theatre?

It says this show is recommended for 12 years old and up. What does that mean?

While the comedies performed at the Théâtre Édouard VII are of course for everyone, Hello my name is takes a realistic approach and touches on life topics best appreciated by a more adult audience, kids at heart also welcome!

How long does the show last?

Expat Night guests will gather at the nearby Taverne d'Olympia before the show for drinks. The show itself lasts one hour and forty minutes with no intermission.

Is it a show for travellers or French people?

Both! The Théâtre Édouard VII is one of the most crowded private theatres in the city. A lot of VIPs come here to see prestigious Parisian plays. As a traveller, you get the chance to be one of those VIPs with the help of our English subtitles.

Subtitles or “surtitles?”

Surtitles (also called supertitles) are the theatre equivalent of subtitles. That’s because in French “sur” means “above.” At the Théâtre Édouard VII, the text is projected above the stage. Read more about surtitles here.

Is tipping mandatory?

Tips are not mandatory in Parisian theatres. However, ushers will usually expect a small tip of between 2€ and 5€, which you can give them when they've shown you to your seat. Fun fact: the French word for “tip” is “pourboire,” which literally translates to “to have a drink.”
