History and Fun Facts about Fondation Dosne-Thiers
What does a Parisian mansion look like?
Find out with an unforgettable visit to the Dosne-Thiers Foundation.
The Dosne-Thiers Foundation is a Parisian institution dedicated to research in history and political and economic sciences. Located in the Hôtel Dosne-Thiers, Place Saint-Georges (IXᵉ arrondissement), it has been administered by the Institut de France since 1905, following a bequest from Madame Thiers, widow of Adolphe Thiers, statesman and first president of the IIIᵉ Republic.
The current building, rebuilt after the Paris Commune on the site of the Thiers couple's former mansion, houses a rich library specialising in history, with a particularly extensive collection on the XIXᵉ century, including rare works, archives and collections of old press. This documentation centre is open to researchers and historians, offering them a prestigious working environment and access to essential resources for their studies.
In addition to its role as a research centre, the Dosne-Thiers Foundation plays an active role in promoting historical and academic studies. It regularly awards grants and prizes to encourage researchers and academics working in contemporary history and the social sciences.
The foundation's mansion also hosts conferences, symposia and seminars, in collaboration with various academic and cultural institutions. Through these activities, the Foundation contributes to the development of historical studies and the dissemination of knowledge to a specific public.
In addition to its scientific importance, the site itself is an architectural and heritage testimony to the XIXᵉ century. Its library, salons and gardens make it a unique space, where the intellectual and political history of France blends with the refined setting of a private mansion.
Not only does the Dosne-Thiers Foundation remain a major player in the French academic landscape, perpetuating the memory of Adolphe Thiers and supporting research in history and political science, it is also a place where music is dedicated. Numerous concerts are held within these august walls.
