HIGHLIGHTS: Une maison de poupée (A Doll's House)

So… Une maison de poupée (A Doll's House)... an experimental marionette show with human-sized puppets?

"But... that's unheard of", you might say?
You're absolutely right… making this incredible show well worth seeing at the Théâtre du Rond-Point in Paris.

This is a stunning adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's classic by Norwegian director Yngvild Aspeli. With an original and truly inventive approach using puppets, this play explores the themes of female emancipation, social conventions and the quest of finding one’s identity.

On stage, the characters in the play come to life in the form of human-sized puppets (incredible but true!), manipulated with finesse by two puppeteer actors. This choice highlights the very restrictive aspects of the social conventions that weigh down on the characters, particularly that of the heroine, Nora Helmer.

Nora Helmer, a devoted housewife and loving mother, finds herself struggling under the weight of the social expectations placed upon her. Her gradual realisation and decision to leave her husband and home overturn conventions and challenge the established order.

You will be transported into the stifling, cruel world of Une maison de poupée (A Doll's House).

An incredible play that recreates Ibsen's world in all its depth. It's a feast for the eyes and a truly stimulating way to consider subjects that reverberate around us to this day.

History and Fun Facts about Théâtre du Rond-Point

If you ever want to feel the pulse of the French theatre scene, the Théâtre du Rond-Point is the place to be! But which roundabout or "rond-point" is it exactly? It's one of the most famous roundabouts in Paris, located near the Champs-Elysées, smaller than the famous Etoile roundabout under the Arc de Triomphe. Since 1981, it has attracted a host of directors from all over the world and a host of people with a passion for theatre. A major venue for contemporary creation since 1991, the Rond-Point does not programme "what people like, but what they don't yet know they like", according to Jean-Michel Ribes, the theatre's former director. Since 2023, Laurence de Magalhaes and Stéphane Ricordel have taken over the reins of this theatre, which is still rooted in contemporary creation and focuses on living authors.
