History and Fun Facts about the Théâtre Le Splendid

Located in the thriving heart of the Parisian theatre district, the Théâtre Le Splendid has earned a reputation as one of the city’s favorite cafés-concerts venues. Historically, these small and intimate venues have hosted popular comedy, stand-up and one-man-shows, and a host of all-singing, all-dancing acts, cabaret, and improvised theatre. Since they were not technically classed as theatres, cafés-concerts became the hippest place to see shows and to be seen, with more and more springing up all across Paris. Soon, they became the hub of popular entertainment.
When Théâtre Le Splendid opened in 1896 at the height of the Belle Époque period, the splendidly named café-concert boasted a packed programme that blended theatre and music. It became the place where great performers like Maurice Chevalier and Mistinguett first took to the stage. In the 1950s, the theatre was turned into a cinema, but it returned to its original form only a few decades later, and has remained a hugely popular performing arts venue ever since.

In the 1970’s and 1980’s, a band of French actors called the Troupe du Splendid staged numerous comedies for French theatre and cinema, becoming akin to France’s very own Monty Python. In 1974, while Le Splendid was working part-time as both a cinema and a casino, the actors claimed the theatre as their home and gave it the name it bears today. The venue had well and truly earned its place in the hearts of Parisian theatre-goers.
