La Nouvelle Seine
History and Fun Facts about La Nouvelle Seine
A few years ago, a diverse team composed of individuals from varied backgrounds came together to set up a unique project in France’s capital: a floating theatre. Their dream was realized with the advent of La Nouvelle Seine, a whimsical performance hall on a barge, anchored in the shadow of the ornate Notre-Dame, and afloat the scenic banks of the Seine! Theatre, restaurant, and bar, this multi-faceted venue is dedicated to discovery and innovation, whether it be artistic or culinary. The name itself is a clever play on words, La Nouvelle Seine, literally meaning ‘The New Seine’, sounds phonetically the same as ‘La Nouvelle Scène’, meaning ‘The New Stage’! This linguistic lyricism is the kind of artistic whimsy that you can expect to find within the walls of this unconventional venue, wherein cabaret and comedy shows alike perform. Here, the new talents on the Parisian theatre scene rub shoulders with the capital’s freshest faces in cuisine.
From March 2023, La Nouvelle Seine will open its doors to young culinary talents and welcome them as guest chefs. Each month, discover each individual’s creativity as they take over the kitchen and express his or her characteristic know-how!
As the restaurant and bar proposes an ever-evolving and changing menu of home-made, meticulously prepared fishes, the stage will be constantly occupied by a rolling list of new artists and performers.
There is no limit to what you may find at La Nouvelle seine - whether you’re in search of stand-up, a one-man-show, or a cabaret performance, La Nouvelle Seine is an incomparable beacon of talent and an inspiring place of creation.
Enjoy your meal, enjoy the show, and all aboard!

Like all our shows, of course! In this case, Sebastian Marx will perform entirely in English, revealing some hilarious secrets of the French language along the way.
How do I get to the theatre?
The Nouvelle Seine is accessible by lines 4, 10, and the RER B, and the closest metro stations are St Michel and Maubert Mutualité. Please note, once you reach the specified address, you will have to head down to the very banks of the Seine River to enter this unique venue right on a riverboat! Our hotline can be reached in case of difficulty finding the theatre weekdays from 10 am to 7pm Paris time. For details, we invite you to consult the map above.
What do I do when I get to the theatre?
We invite you to arrive 15 minutes before the beginning of the show, and present your voucher at the front desk. The theatre's English-speaking staff members will guide you to your seats.
Can I purchase a programme?
Tickets for The French Language Explained by an American do not include a show programme.
It says this show is not recommended for children under 12. What does it mean?
Sebastian Marx is a typical comedian. Officially, he speaks French and English. Unofficially... he loves to play with slang and explicit language to make you laugh, like the New-York stand-up comedy actor that he is. Get your seatbelts fastened and be prepared to take off...
How long does the show last?
The show lasts exactly one hour.
Is it a show for travellers or French people?
Both! Sebastian Marx is an American living in France for the past 10 years. Over these years he has developed an endless energy to make you laugh, and a lot of jokes about both his American upbringing and his new French life. Parisians, French patrons from the province (i.e. anything French except Paris) and guests from all over the world can see his show and prepare for an evening of laughter!
Is tipping customary?
The Nouvelle Seine is a very small theatre with open seating. It is therefore not expected that you will tip the usher. However, if you feel like rewarding a very nice welcoming host, please note that ushers will usually expect a small tip of between 2€ and 5€, which you can give them when they've shown you to your seat. Fun fact: the French word for “tip” is “pourboire,” which literally translates to “to have a drink.”
Do I have the possibility to eat and/or drink onsite?
This unique theatre on a riverboat also boasts a restaurant and bar, where you are welcome to order food and drink before or after the show. When purchasing your tickets, theatre-goers also have the option to select the category including a glass of champagne, to make you night extra special! If desired, feel free to bring you champagne right into the theatre with you to enjoy during the show.
