HIGHLIGHTS: STÉPHANE DEGOUT RECITAL

There is something about a live performance that transcends temporality. Allow the melodies to envelop your body and spirit as musical excellence is conducted before your very eyes…
Such an immersive experience is offered to you at the Opéra Comique with this staging of L’Amour du chant, op. 1, as performed by the great French bass-baritone Stéphane Degout.

A clear passion for the art of singing is apparent in his recitals. Through this love and devotion, Degout has made a name for himself as one of the leading opera singers of his generation. The immensity of his powerful and expressive vocality is rivalled solely by that of his theatrical prowess, as he takes on the dual role of actor and vocalist to embody a diverse range of roles, from the Baroque repertoire to daring contemporary works.

Upon a host of major international stages, Degout has excelled in complex roles such as Mephistopheles from Faust, Scarpia from Tosca, and Philip II from Don Carlo. Critically acclaimed for his stage performances, he is a regular guest at leading Thespian festivals.

To this day, Stéphane Degout never ceases to enrich his repertoire and to move audiences with his masterful interpretations. This newest selection of recitals will certainly be no exception!
The Opéra Comique is delighted to welcome him for a recital of works by the incredible modern talent of British composer George Benjamin, who has been given a carte blanche to select the performers. Accompanying Stéphane Degout will be none other than the great French pianist Cédric Tiberghien. Bear witness to an incredible trifecta of musical talent!

History and Fun Facts about the Opéra Comique

If you take a walk in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, you will be delighted to discover in the small, quaint Place Boieldieu, a superb building of beautiful proportions topped by six caryatids: the Opéra Comique, a theatre house in Paris, which celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2015. You will be surprised to learn that this gold and red auditorium, also known as Salle Favart, is considered the first modern theatre in France because it was the first to be designed with fully electric equipment for both public and stage lighting.

That doesn’t rest as the only surprise… Despite its name, the Opéra Comique doesn’t only perform comic operas, a particular kind of musical show that mixes sung arias with spoken theatre (the ancestor of the musical), but a wide range of operas as well! It was in this venue that works that are now internationally known were created, such as Berlioz's La Damnation de Faust, Delibes's Lakmé, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande... but also Massenet's Manon and Bizet's Carmen! This hall has welcomed the finest composers and never ceased to welcome works from the contemporary repertoire. Viva la musica! Viva l'opera!
