Théâtre La Comédie Italienne
History and Fun Facts about the Théâtre de la Comédie-Italienne
Theatre-goers and thespian fanatics, you’re in luck — should you happen to be passing through the rue de la Gaîté in Paris (a must-see location for culture and arts fans), you’ll happen across the gorgeous Théâtre de la Comédie Italienne! You’ll likely not miss its stunning cornflower-blue facade, adorned with garlands and baroque motifs. On its first floor, three large arched windows are ensconced by four Tuscan-style pillars and a balcony add a touch of Italian charm to this venue’s friendly face.
Theatre-lovers from Paris and beyond flock to this whimsical venue to hear plays by Italian authors, both classical and contemporary, performed in French. Unlike Paris’s grander Opéra Garnier, the Théâtre de la Comédie Italienne offers a cosy auditorium that encourages close contact with the performing talent.
The theatre as we know it today has existed since 1980. Formerly known as ‘Teatrino italiano’, it was previously located at 15 rue du Maine. Its founder, Attilio Maggiulli, was a former student of Giorgio Strehler at the revered Piccolo Teatro in Milan. He pays homage to and sustains the noble theatrical tradition of commedia dell'arte by staging forgotten plays by Goldoni, Fiorilli, and Gherardi, as well as a host of other famous works.
A dose of Italian glory in the streets of Paris — what’s not to love?
