HIGHLIGHTS: LA SERVA AMOROSA

In 20 years, he wrote more than 200 plays in various genres: tragedies, interludes, dramas, opera librettos and carnival skits. But it was his countless comedies that ensured his success.

Carlo Goldoni transformed Italian comedy with his great skill. He preserved the dynamism of commedia dell'arte by combining it with the comedy of intrigue in a genuine quest for realism in the portrayal of human behaviour. In short, he can be considered as the brilliant creator of modern Italian comedy.

Don’t miss your chance to see one of his most famous comedies on stage at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin: La serva amorosa.

This comedy brilliantly illustrates the ingenuity and vivacity of one of the most endearing figures in classical Italian theatre: the maid Coraline.
The plot takes place in the home of the wealthy Ottavio, where Coraline, the faithful and mischievous maid, devotes herself heart and soul to helping the young Florindo, Ottavio's son, to marry his true love, Rosaura. Faced with the scheming and ambitions of her stepmother Beatrice, who is seeking to marry Florindo off for her own ends, Coraline deploys a series of clever and humorous schemes to foil her plans.

Directed by Catherine Hiegel, who played the role of Coraline more than 30 years ago at the Comédie-Française, the play is sure to highlight the comic traits and nuances of the characters, while accentuating the misunderstandings that characterise Goldoni's comedy.

The cast includes Hélène Babu, Jackie Berroyer, Olivier Cruveiller, Antoine Hamel, Jeremy Lewin, Tom Pezier, Jérôme Pouly and Stanislas Stanic, all of whom bring out the liveliness and depth of each character.
Luckily for you, in this production Isabelle Carré will play the role of the cheerful, energetic and outgoing Coraline, the play's central character. Her ability to embody both the mischievousness and the benevolence of the maid in love will work wonders.

La serva amorosa at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin is a humorous celebration of Goldoni's comic genius.
Laugh your head off for 2 hours and 30 minutes!
