HIGHLIGHTS: LA FILLE DU RÉGIMENT AT THE ROYAL OPERA OF VERSAILLES

In 1840, Paris was buzzing to the sound of a new masterpiece by Gaetano Donizetti: La Fille du Régiment. This comic opera, written in French, came at just the right time to celebrate the glories of France, as the country was preparing to welcome the ashes of Napoleon.

On the stage of the Royal Opera of Versailles, let yourself be carried away by the extraordinary story of Marie, a young woman brought up by a regiment of French soldiers. In love with the brave Tonio, she finds herself torn between her love for him and her attachment to her adopted family.

Donizetti's score is rich in emotion, combining patriotic arias, fiery bel canto and moments of tender humour. Tonio's famous aria, “Ah! mes amis, quel jour de fête!”, with its nine counter-cuts, is a veritable Everest of lyrical art that Patrick Kabongo will tackle with mastery.

On the stage of the Royal Opera of Versailles, virtuoso soloists Gwendoline Blondeel and Patrick Kabongo will be accompanied by the Chœur de L'Armée Française and the Chœur et l'Orchestre de l'Opéra Royal. Together, they will sweep you away in a whirlwind of emotions and a humorous celebration of love, camaraderie and the greatness of France.

An opera created in an important historical context and performed today in an incredible historic venue. A feast for both the eyes and ears!

STORY: LA FILLE DU RÉGIMENT AT THE ROYAL OPERA OF VERSAILLES

Imagine a regiment of French soldiers, a young woman brought up by these brave warriors, a passionate love affair and opera arias that send your heart soaring. That's the essence of La Fille du régiment, Gaetano Donizetti's masterpiece that comes to the Royal Opera of Versailles with masterful staging prepared by Jean-Romain Vesperini.

Marie, our heroine, is a young lady like no other. She has no family, no castle, but an entire regiment to pamper her. Raised by these rough but tender-hearted men, she has become their mascot, the “daughter of the regiment”.

But then Marie falls in love with Tonio, a young man who saved her life. The problem is that Tonio is not in the regiment, and his love for Marie will shake up the established order. Patriotic songs, duelling lyrical arias and hilarious misunderstandings follow one another in this musical comedy full of twists and turns.

La Fille du régiment is much more than just an opera: it's an ode to love, family and country. A vibrant, humorous show that will have you laughing, crying and singing at the top of your lungs.

History and Fun Facts about the Royal Opera of Versailles

Categorized as one of the largest performance halls in Europe during its inauguration in 1770 requested by Louis XV, it is presently still admired as one of the grand luxurious stages in Paris due to its lavishing décor composed of early-century design. The ceiling above the room comprises an exquisite form of art, something similar to what you would see in the Sistine Chapel in Rome.

Opéra Royal was no ordinary room, it was prestigious among wealthy individuals who fancied theater. Hosting 1,500 people, only a specific number of guests were invited to view the best shows in Paris at the esteemed Versailles palace. Later, the room was also used as a ballroom and a banquet hall.

After the revolution, the Opéra Royal room was left whole but stripped of its 18th-century embellishment. Altering its original appearance, the room is renovated for official shows such as the opening of the Versailles museum in 1837. Renovated and inaugurated once again in 1957 after the Second World War by orders of architect André Japy, the room undertook a whole new look. In 2009 Opéra Royal opened its doors to spectators from all over the world and began to display an array of enlightened shows such as contemporary dance, ballet recitals, opera, and classical music concerts. Presently it offers more than 100 performances per season in its golden room occupied with ostentatious chandeliers, surrounded by red velvet seating.
