HIGHLIGHTS: Hercules Room Concert Series in Versailles

The Château de Versailles (Versailles Castle) is best known the world over for its beautiful decor and excessiveness. However, it is much less well known for its close relationship with classical music.

For your listening pleasure, four halls within the famous Versailles Castle host concerts conducted by internationally renowned conductors that are ready to take your breath away. Their speciality lies in presenting their visions of well-known and lesser-known composers from the Baroque and Romantic eras.

In addition to the Royal Opera of Versailles, the Royal Chapel of Versailles, and The Crusades Room, the decadent the Hercules Room, decorated in marble, lined with Corinthian columns, and featuring a painted ceiling depicting the Apotheosis of Hercules, offers you the chance to discover some truly beautiful scores.

Please note that due to the historic nature of these rooms, there is no accommodation for surtitles.

History and Fun Facts about the Hercules Room

At the Château de Versailles, anything is possible, even listening to a beautiful concert in one of the most beautiful rooms in the palace: Le Salon d'Hercule (The Hercules Room). The Hercules Room is a salon giving access to the Grand Appartements of the King in the Château de Versailles.

A passageway from the north wing to the central body, this salon is not strictly speaking part of the Grand Apartments, although it is often associated with them. The largest salon in the Versailles Castle, it faces East and West and is located close to the Salon de l'Abondance. What really sets it apart is its decoration.

Begun in 1712 under the direction of Robert de Cotte, the work was interrupted by the death of Louis XIV in 1715, then resumed in 1729, and finally completed in 1736. The exceptional quality of the marble and the splendour of the bronzes on the mantelpiece contribute to making this one of the most beautiful rooms in the Castle. The paintings that adorn the salon also attract attention, including Feast at the House of Simon by Veronese and the ceiling, one of the largest in the world, depicting The Apotheosis of Hercules, one of Francois Lemoyne's great masterpieces. The Hercules Room was inaugurated on 26 January 1739 with a ball to celebrate the marriage of Louis XV's eldest daughter to the Spanish Infante.

Today, you can enjoy concerts given by renowned musicians. Surround yourself by some of France’s most beautiful paintings, venues, and musicians… An unforgettable memory.
